(Washington, D.C. – September 22, 2016) EDF Action today announced a six-figure mail campaign to support Pennsylvania U.S. Senate candidate Katie McGinty, building on its TV ad campaign and mail effort earlier this year.

In total, EDF Action has spent more than $1 million in support of McGinty.

McGinty has been an environmental leader in the administrations of President Bill Clinton and Governor Ed Rendell, while her opponent, Pat Toomey, has voted consistently against common sense pollution limits. The Koch Brother’s group Freedom Partners filed paperwork this week showing they will spend yet another $500,000 attacking Katie McGinty, bringing their total reported spending on Pat Toomey’s behalf this election to $6.7 million.

“Katie McGinty has more experience protecting our kids from air and water pollution than anyone running for the Senate anywhere in America. Meanwhile, Pat Toomey’s record has been in lock-step with big polluters – and they are working hard to keep him in office,” said EDF Action president Elizabeth Thompson.

The mailers, being sent to 150,000 Pennsylvania households, provide information on the records of both candidates.

On Toomey, the mailers cite the fact that he:

    • Voted to gut protections for children and families from mercury and other dangerous toxics (Senate Vote 139, 6/20/12
    • Voted to protect $24 billion in tax loopholes for big oil polluters (Senate Vote 63, 3/29/12; Evansville Courier and Press, 4/1/12
    • Voted to gut clean air and water protections (Senate Vote 295, 11/3/15; Senate Vote 9, 1/21/2015)

In contrast, Katie McGinty, a mother of three, took on the special interests and “fought to rein in mercury pollution… and engage the private sector in cleaning up waste coal and acid mine drainage poisoning Pennsylvania’s rivers.” (AP, 2/27/16)
