(Issaquah, Washington - June 26, 2019) Today, EDF Action launched a digital ad thanking Representative Kim Schrier (WA-08) for leading an amendment to protect public health by safeguarding the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS). MATS limit the dangerous pollution — like mercury, arsenic, acid gas, and lead — spewing from America’s coal-fired power plants. In doing so, it prevents up to 11,000 American deaths, 4,700 heart attacks, and 130,000 childhood asthma attacks every year. It is key to our health and safety.

“Thanks to Representative Schrier’s leadership, kids across the country may be able to breathe a little easier,” said Elizabeth Gore, EDF Action’s Senior Vice President, Political Affairs. “The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) are important for the health and well-being of our children and Washington families – helping to significantly reduce the number of asthma attacks our children experience and dramatically decreasing the number of premature deaths. Our ad will help ensure that the people of Rep. Schrier’s community know that she’s standing up to special interests who wish to roll back the pollution standards meant to protect our families.”

This amendment was introduced by Representative Schrier and passed with the Interior-EPA funding bill bill (H.R. 3055). It will ensure that the Environmental Protection Agency cannot finalize a rule jeopardizing this critical public health protection.

This ad campaign is running in twelve districts thanking members on both sides of the aisle for this critical public health vote.
