HARRISBURG, Pa. — “Reports that Governor Shapiro is agreeing to give away Pennsylvania’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI)—the state’s strongest tool to cut power plant pollution and provide relief to ratepayers—in exchange for a deal to pass a budget are deeply concerning.
“RGGI is a framework that works. Participating states have seen power plant pollution cut nearly in half, with the proceeds reinvested to provide direct assistance on energy bills to those that need it while diversifying the grid through the buildout of clean energy. Voters across the country spoke clearly last week that they want leaders who fight for real solutions that can bring energy costs down. Governor Shapiro appears to be perilously close to walking away from Pennsylvania’s best one.”
