Lawmakers: Pass California Assembly Bill 825 Now

Help Californians Save Billions of Dollars on Electricity Costs While Fighting Climate Change

Clean power is cheaper and essential to reducing climate-altering emissions. By passing AB 825, California will have the modern grid needed to build a clean power future the fastest, cheapest way possible. Lawmakers must act decisively and pass this bill this year or California will pay more for dirty power.

Widespread Support

California leaders are joining advocates for the environment, labor unions, utilities, power producers, consumers, and technology in supporting AB 825 because it will unlock a more affordable, reliable clean power future. Collaboration with our neighbors across the West is the key to overcoming the limitations of today’s grid, which was built for power derived from fossil fuels.

“This is our best shot at lowering energy costs, now the legislature must take action this year and deliver for the people of California.”
— Governor Gavin Newsom
A Simple Choice

State leaders are rightly focused on making California a more affordable place to live. By passing AB 825, California will help keep power bills in check while expanding clean power access. Our families and businesses would save more than $1 billion on annual energy costs while climate emissions decline 58 percent in California and 39 percent across the West.

“California must continue to lead and step up, or others will.”
— Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas
California Leadership, Not Isolation.

Two initiatives are competing to coordinate 38 separate power markets across the West. Passing AB 825 will put California at the forefront of this fast-moving revolution instead of being left behind by it.

Time is Running Out

If lawmakers don’t pass AB 825 this year, more states will move on without California. Some have already made this choice. By passing AB 825, lawmakers can provide a path for more affordable, reliable power and a firm financial foundation for clean energy growth and jobs.

Failure is not an Option

Failing to pass AB 825 is California’s worst case scenario because it makes the state an isolated electricity island. This will cause energy price spikes by cutting our power imports (nearly 25 percent of total supply in recent years), prolong our dependence on more expensive dirty power, and dramatically increase our vulnerability to blackouts.
