Statement from U.S. Aquaculture Campaign Director Maddie Voorhees
WASHINGTON, October 14, 2025 – “Today, U.S. Representatives Ezell (R-MS), Cammack (R-FL), Panetta (D-CA) and Case (D-HI) introduced the Marine Aquaculture Research for America (MARA) Act to advance U.S. aquaculture while prioritizing the health of our oceans.
“Introduced in the Senate in August, the MARA Act underscores the growing recognition that open ocean aquaculture must be guided by rigorous research, robust environmental monitoring and demonstration projects that protect marine ecosystems. By generating the scientific knowledge needed to develop aquaculture responsibly, the MARA Act helps ensure that seafood production in U.S. waters supports both coastal communities and the long-term resilience of our oceans.
“EDF Action looks forward to working with congressional leaders to ensure that U.S. aquaculture development sets a global standard for environmental protection, innovation and sustainability.”
