WASHINGTON, DC, November 4, 2025 – Voters in New Jersey have elected Rep. Mikie Sherrill as the next governor of their state. The closely watched off-year statehouse election served as a gut check for an electorate clearly displeased with the high cost of living including some of the highest energy bill increases in the nation. Fifty-nine percent of battleground constituents in a recent Navigator survey ranked increases in utility bills among the highest burdens on household budgets.
“EDF Action congratulates New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill. Make no mistake, out of control energy costs were a top tier issue in this year’s election, and in Sherrill, New Jerseyans have elected a governor who knows that renewable energy is cheaper, cleaner, and faster to deploy than dirty, old alternatives, and who has a strong mandate to lead the Garden State forward. She did not bow to those whose interests ran counter to the people she will now serve.”
During the 2024 campaign, Donald Trump said he would “cut your energy prices in half within 12 months.” Nearly a year in, energy prices are rising at more than twice the overall rate of inflation, with electricity rates up a whopping 22.2% in New Jersey.
