(Washington, D.C.,- August 20, 2020) The Trump administration and the Postmaster General have implemented changes that have resulted in slower mail delivery, and made it harder to send letters and packages, exacerbating problems at the already underfunded United States Postal Service (USPS). For centuries, the USPS has provided critical services for the United States. And now, during a pandemic Americans are relying on the mail more than ever before for crucial items, including mail-in ballots, social security checks and prescription medications.

That’s why the U.S. House of Representatives is planning a vote as soon as Saturday on the Delivering for America Act (H.R. 8015) to protect mail delivery and provide additional funding for the USPS to help ensure the United States can hold safe and secure elections this fall. EDF Action encourages all members to support this bill.

EDF Action Senior Vice President of Political Affairs Elizabeth Gore released the following statement:

“There is a lot on the line this November for our democracy and for our efforts to make real and lasting progress on climate change. That’s why we need safe and secure elections this November, including reliable and timely mail-in ballots. Undermining the Postal Service could disenfranchise voters all across our country, and during a pandemic we should be looking for ways to make voting easier and safer, instead of making voters choose between their right to vote and their health.

“The reports of USPS delays and the removal of mailboxes are disturbing and create unnecessarily hurdles for voters trying to cast their ballot for our families, our health and our environment. It is simply unacceptable for the Administration to be causing this uncertainty around voting and denying the USPS the resources and tools it needs to do its job.”
