The U.S. Senate passed two resolutions tonight designed to prevent progress against climate change – measures the President has already said he’d veto. As expected, both votes were far short of the number need to advance the sponsor’s goal of eliminating all national limits on carbon pollution from power plants.

S.J. Res. 23 and S.J. Res. 24 were designed to undo the historic Clean Power Plan.

“At a time when America needs strong leadership to address the threat of climate change, the Senate instead decided to engage in political theater on measures that won’t survive a veto,” said EDFAction president Elizabeth Thompson. “The Clean Power Plan will protect Americans’ lives and health, and will help our country reap the economic benefits of a clean energy future. The two resolutions passed today would prevent any progress on those fronts, and leave us mired in a status quo filled with unlimited pollution from power plants and growing damage from climate change. The rest of the world is moving ahead; our Congressional leaders must do better.”
