“President Trump has tossed Congress a damaging new proposal that cuts $250 million in spending from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to help pay for disaster recovery in hurricane-affected areas. It is unfortunate that during a national emergency the Trump Administration has resorted to political game-playing at the expense of EPA’s assistance programs for state and tribal governments and the agency’s core environmental missions.

“It is a cynical ploy for President Trump to single out EPA for large cuts – spending offsets that could be paid for with emergency funds – claiming that they are necessary in order to help hurricane victims. Cuts to the State and Tribal Assistance Grants will hurt states and tribes across the nation that depend on EPA to help fund their public health efforts. Cuts to EPA’s administrative accounts will further hollow out the agency’s ability to do its job of protecting the environment and our public health.”
