(Washington, D.C. – July 26, 2017) EDF Action applauds Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) for their continued effort to address the dangers of climate change.

The Senators just introduced the American Opportunity and Carbon Fee Act of 2017. The bill would put a fee on emissions from coal, oil, and natural gas. It also covers the largest emitters of non-fossil fuel greenhouse gases.

This legislation would make a big difference to reduce climate pollution, protect our children’s future, and boost job-creating clean energy solutions. With the lack of leadership from the Administration, it is even more important for Congress to step up to the plate,” said Jeremy Symons, EDF Action Senior Advisor. “We look forward to working with the sponsors and all Members of Congress to help make good climate bills even better. For any carbon tax legislation, that means including an Environmental Integrity Mechanism that includes specific emissions reduction targets and timelines, as well as provisions to ensure they are met”.
