“Senator Susan Collins’ announcement tonight that she will oppose Scott Pruitt’s nomination as head of the Environmental Protection Agency is great news – for the state of Maine, and for the entire country.

“Senator Collins has made a courageous decision that puts the health and safety of Maine’s citizens above politics and party. Mr. Pruitt has built his political career by trying to undermine EPA’s mission of environmental protection. That is not the ‘leadership’ we need. I am grateful to the Senator for recognizing and acting on that.

“Mainers know first-hand the vital importance of clean air, safe water and a healthy environment. They know their state is at the end of our country’s air pollution ‘tailpipe,’ and that their friends and families suffer from higher than average asthma rates. They know that Maine’s economy benefits greatly from the beauty and bounty of its natural resources. They count on strong leadership from their Congressional delegation to help preserve those natural treasures, and to protect the health of their children. Tonight they got that leadership from Senator Collins. I call on other lawmakers to follow her highly principled example.”
