NEWS RELEASE

(Washington, D.C. – September 28, 2016) EDF Action today announced a six-figure mail campaign to educate voters in four critical House seats, where candidates have environmental policy positions far outside the mainstream. EDF Action will educate voters about dangerous environmental views of incumbent Reps. Cresent Hardy (NV-4) and Scott Garrett (NJ-5) as well as those of candidates Jason Lewis (MN-2) and Danny Tarkanian (NV-3).

“Voters have important choices to make in all four of these districts,” said Elizabeth Thompson, President of EDF Action. “In each case the record shows a stark choice between a candidate who sides with polluters and denies climate science and a candidate who will put our health and environment first. Our aggressive mail program will educate voters about the men and women on the ballot in these four critical races.”

EDF Action is making the case to voters in these four races:

New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District Scott Garrett (R-Incumbent) vs. Josh Gottheimer (D-challenger)

  • Scott Garrett’s extreme record in Congress does not represent New Jersey values. He denies the science on climate change (The Record, 11/03/02) to stand with big polluters in voting against air pollution controls, gutting clean water protections and protecting tax breaks for big polluters
  • Josh Gottheimer believes that we must address climate change and is willing to stand up to polluters.

Nevada’s Fourth Congressional District Ruben Kihuen (D-Challenger) vs. Cresent Hardy (R-Incumbent)

  • Cresent Hardy calls himself a “far right” conservative who calls coal “clean-burning source” of energy and consistently sides with big polluters over a healthy and clean Nevada.
  • Ruben Kihuen is a proven progressive champion who wants to invest and expand renewable energy and create clean energy jobs to help our environment and our economy.

Nevada’s Third Congressional District Danny Tarkanian (R) vs. Ruben Kihuen (D) (Open Seat vacated by Joe Heck)

  • Danny Tarkanian is a frequent political candidate who calls climate science “fraudulent” and has been plagued by proximity to scandal and bad business deals.
  • Jacky Rosen has shown a commitment to expanding Nevada’s clean energy economy and protecting the states natural treasures. She led an effort, as President of Congregation Ner Tamid in Henderson, build one of the largest nonprofit solar installations in the region.

Minnesota’s Second Congressional District Jason Lewis (R) vs. Angie Craig (D) (Open Seat vacated by John Kline)

  • Jason Lewis is an extremist who is far too extreme for this Minnesotan community. He has a long, active history of climate science denials, makes light of slavery, and demeans women.
  • Local businesswoman Angie Craig knows that climate change is real and believes we must invest in sustainable energy to protect our health and improve our economy.

EDF Action has already spent more than $1 million to support Katie McGinty for Pennsylvania Senate against Senator Pat Toomey and joined with LCV to spend more than $1 million to support Russ Feingold in taking on Senator Ron Johnson in Wisconsin.

EDF Action is a bipartisan organization, having supported Carolos Curbelo, a Republican with a strong record on the environment, for re-election in Florida.
